Fasteners
Fasteners are mechanical devices used to join two or more components together. They generally provide a temporary or permanent connection. The most common types of fasteners include:
- Bolts: Cylindrical fasteners with external threads, used with a nut or threaded hole. They are often used in heavy-duty applications like machinery and construction.
- Nuts: Internal-threaded fasteners designed to fit onto bolts to secure them in place.
- Screws: Threaded fasteners that are often used to join materials like wood, metal, or plastic. They usually work by threading directly into a material or into a nut.
- Rivets: Permanent fasteners used to hold parts together, usually by deforming one end after insertion through a hole (commonly used in metalworking and aviation).
- Washers: Thin, flat discs placed between a fastener and the surface it is securing to distribute the load or protect the surface from damage.
- Pins: Typically used to secure parts in place, like cotter pins, dowel pins, or spring pins.
- Clips: These are small devices used to secure or hold components together, such as hose clips, retaining clips, and spring clips.
Fixings
Fixings are similar to fasteners but are more specific in the context of attaching objects to a surface or substrate, especially in construction and building applications. They can include:
- Wall Plugs (Rawl Plugs): These are used in conjunction with screws to anchor screws into masonry, brick, or drywall. The plug expands as the screw is driven in, providing a secure hold.
- Anchor Bolts: Large bolts used to anchor structures to concrete or masonry foundations.
- Hangers: Used to support and secure pipes, cables, and other items from ceilings or walls.
- Brackets: Metal or plastic devices used to support, connect, or reinforce parts of structures, such as shelving brackets or corner brackets.
- Straps: Flexible or rigid bands used to secure or brace parts, often used in construction and HVAC installations.
- Anchor Screws: Screws specifically designed to anchor or fix items to a surface, particularly when additional grip is needed, such as in drywall or plaster.
